about us
Entering As Kindred Spirits you feel an oasis of the extraordinary, a place where the artist’s spirit is palpable in the objects you touch and the atmosphere you breathe.
That feeling you catch when you walk into As Kindred Spirits is rooted in the spiritual journey of the owner, Rukmini Walker, and her husband, Geoff. Who, after being vegetarians, living in India and managing yoga ashrams for over 20 years, she decided to put her spiritual ethics to work as a social entrepreneur.
Her first venture was a small kiosk in the now defunct Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado. After moving to Maryland in 1994, she opened the first store at Congressional Plaza in Rockville, followed by a second location at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.
The As Kindred Spirits ideal is that truth and beauty need to coexist in the world "as kindred spirits." Therefore, funds generated by offering beautiful objets d'arte go to support environmental, fair trade, interfaith, and women's initiatives in the United States and developing countries.
Through the years our staff has grown to an inter-generational community of over thirty fascinating women with multifarious talents. As your "Kindred Spirits," we love to share with you our passion for the creative process; to make you smile with the gift of form and texture, of vibrant color and great design, of light and laughter.
